Programme Details: Talk therapy (or psychological interventions) for people affected by bipolar disorder Both Hong Kong and Western community studies have consistently shown bipolar disorder is more pervasive than previously thought when the entire spectrum of bipolar disorder is considered. In Hong Kong, the lifetime prevalence of manic, hypomanic and soft hypomanic episodes have been reported to be 2.2%, 2.2% and 10.7% respectively (Lee, S. et al). This talk focuses on the psychological interventions, or the so-called “talk therapy”, for individuals with bipolar disorder, to be followed by “walk the talk”- brief remarks on how counsellors should look after their own emotional wellbeing.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Samson Tse

Dr. Samson Tse returned to Hong Kong in late 2008 to take up the post of Programme Director of Master of Social Sciences in Counselling at The University of Hong Kong after residing in New Zealand for twenty years. Prior to his return, Samson worked as Associate Professor, Director of Mental Health, Director of Centre for Asian Health Research and Evaluation in the School of Population Health, The University of Auckland. He was the Faculty’s Associate Dean (International, 2004-06) and played a significant role in the Centre for Gambling Studies. His areas of doctoral supervision and teaching include abnormal psychology, addiction, human development, mental health (e.g., resilience, possible selves), and recovery from serious mental health problems, in particular involving people affected by mood disorders, problem gambling and family violence.
