Venue: Room LG106, KK Leung Building, The University of Hong Kong.

2:00 p.m. Registration

2:30 p.m. Forum on “THE WOUNDED HEALER – COUNTER-TRANSFERENCE: FRIEND OR FOE?”

In 1951, Carl Jung first used the term “wounded healer”, believing that the suffering of the soul offers one best possible form of training for a healer. Victor Frankl considers suffering as a fundamental human experience, giving meaning to life. The phenomenon of Counter-transference provides the opportunity to examine if personal wounds can be facilitative or impeding in counselling.

In counsellor training, it is often that the learning of skills and techniques is emphasized, forgetting perhaps the very fundamental condition of the use of self in therapy. Does who I am as a person affect who I am as a counsellor? The concept of “wounded healer” brings forth the vital need to attend to the counsellor as a person.

In this forum, graduates from the MSS Counselling programme will speak to their own counter-transference with clients. As Jung said, the therapist is “as much in the analysis as the patient”. Such candid self reflection will bring in a refreshing scene to counsellor training, and hopefully the awareness that the failure to manage counter-transference probably results in the counsellor retreating into the technicalities of the counselling act to cope with anxieties so aroused by the client.
